CROWN POINT | The Lake County prosecutor's office charged a St. John Township couple this week with child abuse and neglect.

Nanette M. Burdeau, 28, and Anthony R. Way, 29, are charged with seven felony counts alleging they battered a 3-year-old boy between Oct. 31, 2012, and Jan. 2 of this year.

Lake County police said the Lake Hills Fire Department was called Jan. 2 to the couple's home in the 10200 block of West 85th Avenue and found the boy suffering from a severe head injury and bruises over much of his body, court records allege.

Burdeau and Way said their dog knocked the child over and that the child bruised easily.

Lake County police said the boy was rushed to University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital, where staff reported the child's injuries appeared to be the result of repeated episodes of abuse.

Police said Burdeau also failed to seek medical attention when the child suffered an earlier head injury in October.
