SCHERERVILLE | Residential construction has increased in Schererville and commercial development appears to be on the rise.
So far this year, the town has issued 26 new single-family residential building permits, two four-unit residential permits and one six-unit residential permit, according to a report from the Planning and Building Department.
Schererville issued 16 single-family permits and no four-unit or six-unit permits in 2011.
"We're glad to see it's up," Town Council President Tom Schmitt said of residential construction.
Schmitt thinks the town's tax rate and the Lake Central School Corp. are among reasons people are deciding to move to Schererville.
He also credits home builders for bringing new residents to the town.
Fifty-one building permits were issued in 2011 for commercial and industrial purposes, according to the Planning and Building Department. Those permits involved new developments and remodeling existing structures.
The town has issued the same amount of permits so far this year.
Schmitt said major commercial developments this year include the new 38,000-square-foot Team Toyota dealership at 400 Indianapolis Blvd., the Menards store at 1300 U.S. 41 and the Hampton Inn and Suites on U.S. 41 near U.S. 30.
In June, the town's Plan Commission also approved constructing a Country Inn & Suites and Staybridge Suites on Fountain Park Drive.
While pleased with commercial growth this year, Schmitt thinks development will remain strong in 2013 with plans for the Shops on Main development revitalized.
Last month, the Town Council authorized a financing agreement with Boyer Properties for the development, which would include high-end shopping and restaurants near the southeast corner of U.S. 41 and Main Street.
Boyer also started presenting proposals for the development during Plan Commission study sessions this month.
