SCHERERVILLE | Three people were taken into custody Thursday afternoon after allegedly trying to pass counterfeit $100 bills at Schererville businesses along U.S. 41.
According to Schererville Police Cmdr. Brian Neyhart, employees of Red Robin contacted police at 12:09 p.m. saying a man was trying to pay for his meal with a phony $100 bill.
Shortly thereafter, police received calls from nearby Dollar General and Penn Station reporting a suspect matching the description of the man from Red Robin also trying to pass counterfeit $100 bills.
Neyhart said witnesses provided a description of a vehicle involved. An officer spotted and stopped the vehicle at U.S. 30 and U.S. 41.
Police took one woman and two men into custody.
Neyhart said Schererville police called in the assistance of agents from the U.S. Secret Service, which investigates cases of fraudulent currency.
Neyhart said Friday charges are pending and may be filed in federal court.
