Irving Berlin could always write the perfect song for any holiday. His tune "Count Your Blessings" is great for Thanksgiving.

“When I'm worried and I can't sleep, I count my blessings instead of sheep, and I fall asleep counting my blessings,” is a great line.

I’ve been blessed with a loving family, a great church family and caring friends. By being a Schererville Lion and working at the Schererville Chamber of Commerce, I’ve met people who truly make a difference in the community.

The chamber is displaying a Senior Wish Tree from Home Instead Senior Care. The chamber office, 13 W. Joliet St., along with Riverdale Auto Body, 2500 U.S. 41, are drop-off points for everything mentioned below.

The Schererville Lions Club, through your donations, are providing Thanksgiving turkeys and Christmas hams to Schererville American Legion Post 485 food baskets. They are collecting mittens and hats for Immanuel Presbyterian Church’s mitten tree and are always collecting used eyeglasses, too.

American Legion Post 485 is collecting toys and food items for families. They always collect items for our veterans at Indiana Veterans Home in West Lafayette, too.

Food drives are being conducted by Teachers Credit Union, Anytime Fitness, McColly Real Estate and Capri Pizza (which, along with Baum Stores, is also collecting Toys for Tots). Teachers Credit Union also has an Angel Tree.

Albert’s Diamond Jewelers is offering a free watch battery for an in-store (Schererville) food donation to help those affected by Typhoon Haiyan. Campagna Academy has a giving tree at Southlake Mall, near Carson’s. Culver's is helping the St. John Township Trustee collect warm clothing through Saturday.

The NICK Foundation and Halo of Hope Foundation are helping children with cancer.

Humane Society of the Calumet Area and Schererville Animal Control are always looking for pet food, cleaning items, gently used towels, blankets, etc.

Sweet Frog Yogurt has fundraisers almost every day for a different local organization.

As we receive other opportunities to help, we will post them on the Schererville Chamber of Commerce  Facebook page. Please “like” us at

Don’t forget to bring the family to the Schererville Parks and Recreation Department/Chamber of Commerce Santa Comes to Town – Christkindlmarket,  from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Community Center, 500 E. Joliet St.

Santa plans to arrive at 4, and there will be games and raffles for the children, raffles, vendors for Christmas shopping, Teibel’s hot chocolate and cookies from Strack and VanTil.

So, as you count your blessings this Thanksgiving and prepare for the merriest of Christmases, I hope you will remember those who could use a little help.

My family and I hope all your days will be merry and bright.
