SCHERERVILLE | A stretch of Austin Avenue is slated for improvements this year.

The Town Council recently approved a proposal for final design and construction engineering services from NIES Engineering for the project.

Town Manager Bob Volkmann said Austin Avenue will be reconstructed from U.S. 30 to 77th Avenue. A water main will be replaced during the project, he said.

Town Council President Rob Guetzloff said he is "very pleased" the project is advancing.

Volkmann said the town still needs to seek bids on improvements, and there will be a public meeting for residents who live near the work area.

The project is expected to start this year, but an exact start date hasn't been announced.

Councilman Jerry Tippy said the portion of Austin Avenue identified for reconstruction has needed improvements "for some time."

Tippy said Schererville has collaborated with the developer of the Residences at Deer Creek senior citizen assisted living community for road improvements.

The development was constructed near the U.S. 30 and Austin Avenue intersection.

"When the assisted living facility project was planned, it made sense that we partner with the developer and move forward with the (road) project," Tippy said.

Increased traffic is expected at the U.S. 30 and Austin Avenue intersection because of the new facility, but Tippy said the roadwork will improve the traffic flow after the improvements are finished.
