SCHERERVILLE | Schererville Special Operation Task Force officers have filed various drug-related charges against two Knox., Ind. residents.
The charges stem from a series of incidents March 13 at the Motel Lee, 1234 W. Lincoln Highway, Schererville.
Police said Steven Patrick Hansen, 37, and Janelle Aileen Smoot, 35, had rented a room at the motel.
At some point during their stay, Smoot had difficulty breathing and an ambulance was called.
Hansen left the motel and drove out of the parking lot, striking a car and fleeing the scene. Schererville fire personnel, who had responded to the emergency call, saw the accident.
Hansen returned a short time later and police were called to the motel.
During the accident investigation, Hansen gave police permission to enter his rented motel room, where they found several hypodermic needles, drug paraphernalia and cocaine.
Hansen is charged with possession of cocaine, maintaining a common nuisance, possession of paraphernalia, operating while suspended and leaving the scene of an accident.
Smoot is charged with possession of cocaine, visiting a common nuisance and possession of paraphernalia.
Both are wanted on warrants through the Lake County prosecutor's office.
