SCHERERVILLE | A Valparaiso man is accused of stealing more than $188,000 last year from his former employer.
Joseph Lara, 47, was charged with felony theft, fraud on a financial institution and five counts of forgery.
Court documents state officials from Brant Construction determined five checks had been made payable to "LPMS" in September and November last year.
The owners of the business didn't authorize the checks, which totaled $188,346, and the signatures on the checks were forged, the documents state.
Lara, a former Brant employee, was the only account holder for the "LPMS" bank account in which the checks were deposited, according to the documents.
