Memorial Day is Monday, and for some people, it’s become a three-day mini-vacation, filled with planting and a cookout or two. Sometimes, we seem to forget the true meaning of Memorial Day.

If you can, please stop by the St. John Township War Memorial (located by the Schererville Police Station), check out the Memorial Bricks and say a prayer for all those men and women who lost their lives defending our freedom.

Dedication to heroes

Also, return to the war memorial at 3 p.m. June 2 for the formal dedication to two of our Fallen Soldiers, Staff Sgt. David Nowaczyk and Spc. Sergio Perez. The Town of Schererville, the War Memorial Committee and veterans groups will host this memorial service.

Staff Sgt. David Nowaczyk was only 32 when he died April 15, 2012, in Chingai, Kunar province, Afghanistan, of wounds inflicted by an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, CO.

Spc. Sergio Perez was only 21 when he died July 16 2012, in Jannan, Wali Kot district, Afghanistan, from injuries caused when his vehicle was hit by rocket-propelled grenades. He was assigned to the 81st Troop Command, Indiana National Guard, Indianapolis.

Committee members suggest those attending bring  lawn chairs, as seating is limited. Parking is available at the Town Hall and the St. Michael Church northeast parking lots, just a few blocks from the memorial. For more information, or on how to purchase a Memorial Brick, call the Schererville Parks and Recreation Department at (219) 865-5530.

Market is open

Schererville’s Farmers Market has opened and will continue from 3 to 8 p.m. every Thursday, except June 20 and July 4, at Redar Park, Gregory Street at Austin Avenue.

Town hosts festival

Schererville’s Annual Festival runs June 19 through 23 at Redar Park. Times, entertainment and details are listed on the town and Schererville Chamber of  Commerce websites. A parade starting in downtown Schererville will be held at 5 p.m. June 22.

Golden anniversaries

This seems to the 50th anniversary for many Schererville organizations - it's the chamber’s 50th anniversary, the chamber Corn Roast's 50th year (July 26) and the 50th year for Immanuel Presbyterian Church.

If you were a member or are wondering about becoming a member of Immanuel Presbyterian, call the office at (219) 865-2686, to receive information on the church's many upcoming events, celebrating the Rev. Montgomery through the Rev. Noble.
