SCHERERVILLE | Rates for Schererville water customers will be increasing.

The Town Council unanimously adopted an ordinance Wednesday amending the rates and charges collected by Schererville's Water Utility.

The decision came after a recommendation from the town's Waterworks Board.

Town Manager Bob Volkmann said the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission granted Indiana American Water the right to increase rates, which impacts the wholesale rate Schererville pays the company.

The ordinance adopted Wednesday passes along the increase to Schererville water customers. It will increase the schedule of rates and charges by about $1.07 per 1,000 gallons, according to the town.

Volkmann said the new rates won't provide additional revenue to Schererville. He said it's needed so the Water Utility won't operate in the red.

Town Attorney David Austgen said Schererville's financial adviser must file the new rates with the IURC.

The town had a public hearing about the rates during a Waterworks Board meeting prior to the council meeting, but no residents commented about the issue.

In other business, Councilman Jerry Tippy continued to express opposition to the community center project at Sherwood Park.

He questioned if town officials have thoroughly planned out the community center during a discussion about additional costs for the project.

The council awarded a $1.9 million construction bid to Berglund Construction last month for the center.

Tippy said Schererville has a budget around $2.5 million for the project. He is concerned Schererville could go over budget with the additional costs, which include engineering work, interior design and furnishings.

Council President Tom Schmitt said he believes the work will remain within budget.

He and other supporters of the facility have said the center is needed because the parks department has outgrown its existing building in Rohrman Park and the department can increase programming with the new facility.
