SCHERERVILLE | A 34-year-old Schererville woman is accused of leaving her 1-year-old daughter unattended inside a van while she shopped at a grocery store.
Police estimate the temperature inside the van higher than 100 degrees.
Leah Nicole Grentzer told police she forgot her daughter was in the van when she entered the Strack & Van Til store at 1515 U.S. 41.
Grentzer was charged with felony neglect of a dependent, Schererville police said.
Officers were dispatched Aug. 18 to the Strack & Van Til parking lot after receiving a report of an infant unattended in a vehicle.
After locating the van and 1-year-old child, officers entered the vehicle through an unlocked sliding cargo door, police said.
An officer removed the child from the vehicle and placed her in his squad car. A person who identified herself as a nurse assisted the officer by monitoring the child until Schererville's Emergency Medical Services arrived, police said.
The infant was transported to Franciscan St. Margaret Health in Dyer because police were unable to immediately locate the child's parent.
Shortly after transporting the child, Grentzer exited the store, police said.
