ST. JOHN | A St. John woman was killed Saturday after the car she was riding in was struck by a driver police say was drunk.
Sandra Marvel, 66, was pronounced dead Saturday night at Franciscan St. Margaret Health hospital in Dyer, according to Lake County Sheriff's Police.
She died from blunt force trauma as a result of the vehicle accident, according to a Lake County Coroner's office news release.
Michael T. Knezevich, 26, Chesterton, was driving a 1999 Jeep southbound on U.S. 41 at 6:25 p.m. when he made a U-turn south of 109th Avenue and began driving north, police said. Authorities allege Knezevich ignored a red light and struck a Ford Fusion traveling east on 109th Avenue, pushing it into the path of a westbound Volkswagen.
Police said Marvel was a front seat passenger in the Fusion. Her husband was driving and remains hospitalized at Franciscan St. Margaret Health.
The driver of the Volkswagen was treated at Franciscan St. Anthony Health hospital in Crown Point and released.
Police said Knezevich had a blood alcohol content of .216 at the time of the crash, more than two times the legal limit. He is being held at the Lake County Jail on charges of operating while intoxicated causing death.
