ST. JOHN TOWNSHIP | Fire destroyed a home in the 7200 block of West 93rd Avenue late Monday, and killed one of the family’s cats.
Lake Hills Assistant Fire Chief Steve Flores said the family renting the home returned shortly after 10 p.m., opened the side service door near the garage and saw flames and heavy smoke engulfing the kitchen and dining room.
When fire crews from Lake Hills Fire Department arrived, they started battling the fire from the interior, but were eventually forced back as the fire conditions worsened, Flores said.
Fire crews from St. John, Schererville, Crown Point and Crete Township assisted in extinguishing the blaze.
“A cat perished in the fire, and we found one hiding in the basement under a pile of debris. The cat is fine,” Flores said. “From the charring inside the house, the fire had to be burning for a while.”
The entire residence sustained heavy fire, smoke and water damage. After an inspection Tuesday morning, Flores said there is about $100,000 in structural damage and loss of property.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, he said.
“The American Red Cross is assisting the family with food, shelter and clothing,” Flores said.
