ST. JOHN | Schererville Fire Chief Joseph Kruzan and his family teamed up with Lake Central High School officials Tuesday night to raise money for local cancer awareness organizations.
They hosted the first Bump Out Cancer fundraiser while Lake Central High School's varsity volleyball team played Portage High School.
Special jerseys with lavender numbers were created for the program. Lavender is the color representing all cancers, said Kruzan, whose daughter plays on Lake Central's volleyball team.
Kruzan said the idea for the fundraiser stems from the Dig Pink program, which generates funding for breast cancer research through volleyball events.
Kruzan said he and his wife Lindsay wanted to include all cancers, which led to the Bump Out Cancer event.
"It still follows the volleyball theme," Kruzan said.
Cancer awareness groups attended Tuesday's event, and proceeds generated during the program will be provided to those organizations, Kruzan said.
He said Lake Central provided "overwhelming support" for the program, and he hopes it will become an annual event.
