KANSAS CITY | The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S. (VFW) is pleased to announce Tom Clark, a history teacher at Lake Central High School in St. John, Ind., is one of the three recipients of this year’s Smart/Maher VFW National Citizenship Education Teacher Award.

Mr. Clark was selected from entries submitted by VFW Posts across the United States and overseas. The entries detail a local teacher’s act of promoting civic responsibility, flag etiquette and patriotism in the classroom. VFW Post 717 in St. John sponsored Mr. Clark.

Each of the three national recipients receives a $1,000 donation to their individual professional development account and another $1,000 to their school, as well as an all-expense-paid trip to St. Louis, Mo., to participate in the 2014 VFW National Convention, July 19-23. During the contest, the VFW recognized more than 1,400 teachers at various levels, presenting more than $272,000 in awards.

According to VFW National Commander William A. Thien, “We are very proud of Mr. Clark and all the teachers who participated in the program. Their commitment to teach good citizenship to their students will greatly benefit their communities as these students grow into informed and involved adults.”

Kevin Jones, director of VFW Programs, echoed Thien’s remarks. "Next to parents, teachers hold the key to raising up young civic-minded patriots who will perpetuate the values that have made this nation great."

The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S. is a nonprofit veterans’ service organization comprised of combat veterans and eligible military service members from the active, Guard and Reserve forces. Founded in 1899 and chartered by Congress in 1936, the VFW is the nation's largest organization of war veterans and its oldest major veterans’ organization.

With more than 1.9 million VFW and Auxiliary members located in almost 7,000 Posts worldwide, “NO ONE DOES MORE FOR VETERANS.” The VFW and its Auxiliaries are dedicated to veterans’ service, legislative advocacy, and military and community service programs worldwide.
