CROWN POINT | After an extensive investigation into the death of a Lake Central High School student, the coroner's office has officially ruled the boy's death to have been from natural causes.

Levi Evans, 17, was found dead Aug. 8 near Lake Central with no apparent sign of foul play or trauma, according to officials involved in the case.

Lake County Coroner Merrilee Frey reopened the case in November as the family battled in court about the case. She announced in a statement Monday the cause of death remains natural.

According to the autopsy report in November, the cause of death was determined to be a rare heart disorder known as endocardial fibroelastosis.

The condition is defined as a rare heart disorder usually affecting infants and children and characterized by a thickening within the muscular lining of the heart chambers caused by an increase in the connective tissue and elastic fibers.

“I believe it is our responsibility to consider all evidence in each case that is brought forward during a coroner’s investigation. My sincere hope is that the family finds comfort in knowing our investigation was thorough and complete,” Frey said in a statement.
