St. John resident Jessica Tas is proving her versatility as a new member of the St. John Volunteer Fire Department, 11033 W 93rd Ave.
Tas began volunteering with the department on a probationary basis last July, and became a regular member in December.
“My family is in the service and I have been around it my whole life. I love the fact that I get to help people when they need it most,” she said.
Tas, 22, trained six months in firefighter school, and completed another six months to become an Emergency Medical Technician.
“I respond to anything from EMS calls, to car accidents to fires. I do whatever I am needed and told to do,” she said.
“I go to the gym a lot because I want to make sure that I am in great physical shape to do this job,” she added.
Tas is a 2010 graduate of Lake Central High School and attended Paul Mitchell Cosmetology School for hair design.
She is currently enrolled in training at Franciscan St. Anthony Health in Crown Point, and plans to become a full time firefighter and EMT. “I’m learning how to be a first responder on the scene, and hope to graduate by August,” she said of her current schooling.
“The fact that I get to help people and that I love this job more than anything in the world makes the job worth it.”
The daughter of Kathie Parise, Tas enjoys fishing and spending time with her new dog.
