ST. JOHN | A controversial school board meeting took place Monday, Sept. 17 in the LGI room. The main discussion of the night was the start date of the school district.
“It’s not that we are starting earlier, we are still starting at the same point. You have to have 90 days before the break and 90 days after the break; you have to be in school 180 days. It has to be a balanced calendar,” Mrs. Valentina Lozanoski, board member, said.
If this change is approved, it will affect the whole school corporation.
“[We have been hearing from] mostly just the elementary school parents. We haven’t really heard from middle school parents or the high school parents,” Lozanoski said.
It is not only parents who showed strong opinions about this issue, but students as well.
“I just want people to have a better idea of what students would be missing out on if they moved the start date back to after Labor Day,” Anthony Giazzon (12) said.
Giazzon spoke to the school board members at the meeting and stressed the importance of allotting enough time to prepare for Advanced Placement exams.
The board meets every month and will make a final decision at a later date.
