ST. JOHN | Owners or occupants of any building must now give at least a 30-day notice before water service is disconnected by the town.

The Town Council recently amended an ordinance that governs the standards of water service to all residential, commercial and industrial buildings. The action was taken based on a recommendation from the St. John Waterworks Department board.

Both the council and the waterworks board have the same members, and the waterworks board met just before the Town Council meeting.

The person or business whose name is on the water bill is responsible for certifying to St. John Clerk-Treasurer Sherry Sury that the property is unoccupied.

If the property is occupied, the responsible party must let Sury know that “the occupants have been given at least 30 days’ written notice of service termination,” according to the amended ordinance.

The amendment pertains primarily to rental properties, said David Austgen, attorney for St. John.
