CROWN POINT | A 23-year-old St. John man pleaded guilty but mentally ill Thursday to stabbing his mother numerous times in July 2011.
The plea deal calls for Allan Harris to serve 34 months in the Lake County Jail.
In pleading guilty but mentally ill, Harris admitted attacking his mother as she was watching television in the living room of the home they shared in the 8800 block of Lantern Drive.
Harris admitted to coming up behind his mother, who was seated on a loveseat, and repeatedly stabbing her with a kitchen knife with a 6-inch blade.
The woman underwent surgery for stab wounds to the stomach, kidney and hand.
Plea documents state Harris has been diagnosed with and treated for a multitude of mental diseases, including but not limited to schizoaffective disorder
According to charging documents, Harris was home with his parents when he suffered an anxiety attack. Harris was given medication to calm him, but within a short time began stabbing his mother.
Harris is scheduled for sentencing Dec. 17.
