ST. JOHN | The public is cordially invited to join the parish family of St. John the Evangelist Church in gathering on the afternoon of May 6 for the traditional May Crowning of Our Lady of the New Millennium.
The placement of the floral wreath on the head of the statue of Mary is a well-known Catholic tradition honoring Mary as the Queen of Heaven and the Mother of God. May is a month when Catholics honor not just their earthly mothers but their heavenly mother as well. The May crowning is
a reflection of our Catholic identity and is a long-held tradition at St. John the Evangelist Church. It is believed that through the Blessed Mother's intercession, many graces come upon people. The May 6 Crowning will be followed by weekly Marian devotions held on the 13, 20 and 27 of May at St. John the Evangelist Church.
The May Crowning will be preceded by an hour long concert of Sacred Marian Song performed by the St. John the Evangelist Music Ministry at 2:00 p.m. in the church - simultaneously broadcast on Relevant Radio (950AM/930AM/1270AM).
Additionally, Marian devotions and a reflection will be led by Fr. Sammie Maletta, pastor of St. John the Evangelist Church. A Rosary Procession with the Knights of Columbus leading the First Holy Communicants and Confirmation Candidates will then process from the Church to the statue of Our Lady of the New Millennium.
At the conclusion of the Crowning, all are invited to join in fellowship, as light refreshments are served in the "Garden of the Angels," the beautifully landscaped grounds at the east end of the church.
Those at last year's Welcoming for Our Lady of the New Millennium and Legion of Mary members commented, "When you think about the fact that Mary was with her Son Jesus through his Passion and Death, and the fact that Jesus entrusted his mother to St. John at the foot of the cross, it makes perfect sense that Our Lady of the New Millennium make her permanent home here in Saint John, right by St. John the Evangelist Church and the Shrine of Christ's Passion." (Barb Opperman) and Joshphine Kornelik noted, "Our Parish is honored and blessed to have Our Lady of the New Millennium".
