ST. JOHN | St. John the Evangelist Parish's annual Food, Family, Fun festival will open to a four-day run Thursday.
The festival features free nightly entertainment, carnival rides, games for children, indoor bingo, a variety of food vendors, a race, Texas Hold ’em tournaments and a big ticket raffle.
Hours are 5 to 11 p.m. Thursday, 5 p.m. to midnight Friday, 3 p.m. to midnight Saturday and 3 to 10 p.m. Sunday on parish grounds, 9400 Wicker Ave.
A free shuttle bus service, located in the former Kmart parking lot, will make runs Friday and Saturday.
Thursday night is Tropic Fest, where the entertainment includes Pan Go Steel Band, a steel drum band from Trinidad and Aloha Chicago, hula dancers and fire performers.
Local and regional musical talent will perform in the family tent.
Friday night's headliner is Nicole Jamrose. It's also wristband night for deals on carnival rides. Pre-sale wristbands are available for $10 through Thursday at the St. John Strack & Van Til store. The bands sell for $15 at the festival.
New this year is the all weekend MegaPass. It's $30 through Thursday at the St. John Strack & Van Til and $45 at the fest.
Saturday's entertainment is The Crawpuppies and Sunday is Patriotic Spirit Day, where servicemen and women will be honored. The day also will include a performance by Spirit of America Choir.
Entertainment that night is the Tonal Attitude Bank, a funk and brass band.
Sunday also is race day. Each participant must complete and sign an official entry form before the start of the race. Online registration is available at www.stjohnparish.org.
Texas Hold 'em tournaments are set for 7 p.m. Thursday and Saturday in the gym, and a gambling casino will be in the big tent alongside the beer garden.
