ST. JOHN | St. John the Evangelist Church and its pastor, the Rev. Sammie Maletta, will offer a 10-week program beginning Monday for individuals who are struggling with the issue of divorce.
“Divorce is not an event that takes place in a courtroom, it is a process," said Deacon Ed Bodley, who will facilitate the program. " It is a process that begins long before the divorce decree is finalized.
"The same holds true for people in need of healing; that, too, is a process. Often times, people who are faced with a painful divorce are unequipped to deal with the many hardships that they now must deal with.”
This support group will meet at 7 p.m. on 10 consecutive Mondays, beginning Jan. 7. Attendees are bound to a vow of confidentiality, but are not bound in any way to schedule of meetings. Participants can attend any or all of the sessions. Contact Bodley at (219) 365-7784 for further details, including the location.
A proven program, "Divorce and Beyond," will be utilized to help those who are in this situation. It is a 10-step program that deals with the new realities divorced individuals must face.
The sessions take place in a support group setting that includes persons who are struggling with this issue as well as those who can share their own divorce experience.
“People in this situation need a place where they can vent their anger, pain and frustrations,” Bodley said. The initial component of the program is designed for just that. It then transitions to offering experienced advice as to how to best cope with one’s new realities. Then, ultimately it leads to issues of healing, growth and moving forward with one’s life.
