CROWN POINT — The jury trial of Geremiah Erwin on charges of murder scheduled to begin Monday in Lake Criminal Court Judge Clarence Murray’s courtroom was vacated and a status hearing set for Sept. 26.

Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Aleksandra Dimitrijevic filed a motion with Murray to vacate the trial to allow interviews with an additional witness and further negotiation with the defense team headed by Scott L. King.

Erwin, now 20, is charged with murder and murder in the perpetration of robbery.

He is accused of shooting Marchello Valliant multiple times shortly before 5 p.m. Sept. 24, 2013, in the 7500 block of Chestnut Avenue in Hammond, during a drug deal gone bad.

When police arrived on the scene, they said they found Valliant shot in the torso and holding money in his left hand. Valliant was taken to Community Hospital in Munster, where he died.
