ST. JOHN TOWNSHIP | Police said they arrested two men who were target shooting Saturday after a 45-caliber bullet broke through a neighbor's glass door and lodged in a staircase.

Clinton Nash, 41, of Schererville, and Benjamin Winston, 34, of Lufkin, Texas, are being held at Lake County Jail on probable cause for criminal recklessness charges, said Patti Van Til, spokeswoman for the Lake County Sheriff's Department.

Police responded to a call at 3:15 p.m. in the 7900 block of Austin Avenue, just outside Schererville town limits.

Schererville police had responded to a property damage call of a bullet entering a home in the 9300 block of West 77th Avenue. Lake County police found Nash and Winston shooting, Van Til said.

"They were in the backyard of Nash's residence, shooting at targets they had erected," she said.

The targets were unsafe and in violation of county ordinance. One was attached to a plywood sheet, and one was a mannequin style target, she said.

Police reported the area was littered with spent shell casings and loose live rounds of multiple calibers.
