Three local high school concert bands competed Saturday at a statewide competition, with Valparaiso High School placing seventh out of 16 bands.

Bands from LaPorte and Munster high schools were finalists, according to the Indiana State School Music Association's website.

"The kids are very excited," said Miguel Rosario, Valparaiso High's assistant band director. "They are very honored they were able to represent our school."

Valparaiso High also was a finalist in the concert mixed choir category, while LaPorte was a finalist in the concert treble/men's choir division, according to ISSMA's website.

ISSMA's 29th annual State Choir Finals were held in Indianapolis. The groups qualified for the state finals after receiving the highest scores at their respective qualification events, according to an ISSMA news release.
