With the coming of fall and the end of Labor Day weekend, tradition says it's time to put away the summer's white wardrobe.
But local boutique owners said the rule your mother and grandmother followed about not wearing white until after Easter and stopping at Labor Day is now old news.
"That is an old rule," said Alexis Fry, the owner of Alexis, a boutique at 2548 45th St. in Highland.
Lorri Zimmer, the owner of Beyond Pink, a boutique at 901 Calumet Ave., in Valparaiso, said times have changed and wearing white is a matter of matching the weather and making your own style.
"As long as you do it with taste, you can make your own rules," she said.
In fact, both boutique owners said one of fall's must-have items is a white blouse.
"That's so hot right now," Fry said.
Fry said all of the old rules, such as always having to tuck your shirt into your pants or skirts, have been thrown out and you can just about wear anything anywhere.
"People are paying a lot of money for things that are already faded or ripped," she said, adding she doesn't think the old rules will come back anytime soon.
Neither does Zimmer, and she's OK with that.
"If we all dressed the same, we might as well wear a uniform."
