WHITING | A freshman at Whiting High School failed to show up for classes on Friday and hasn't been seen since.

Charlie Mendez, 15, left her home in the 2100 block of Schrage Avenue for a five-block walk to the school around 7 a.m., family members said.

School officials called about her absence during the day, said her father, Ramon Mendez, who reported the girl missing after checking with her friends, who said they hadn't seen her all day.

This is the first time anything like this has ever happened with his daughter, said Mendez, who moved his family to Whiting from Chicago last year.

There were no problems at home, said Mendez. His daughter was a good student who had just been offered an opportunity as an exchange student to Australia, he said.

When last seen Friday morning, Charlie Mendez was wearing a white T-shirt, beige pants and white gym shoes, according to police reports.

Anyone with information about her whereabouts is asked to call the Whiting Police Department at (219) 659-2131.
