WHITING | On Wednesday Jan. 30, Whiting Middle School students were given the opportunity to learn the FREEZE and THINK strategy from ex-NFL player Levar Fisher during his energetic and motivating student assembly. Levar Fisher shared his personal success story with the WMS students and staff, giving them the message that by believing in yourself, having a dream, and making positive choices, students can zone in on their goals and experience success, not only in the classroom but in life.
Levar talked to the students about some of his own past mistakes as well as his experience as a child being bullied. His personal stories showed the students how he learned from these negative experiences and channeled them into something positive in his life. As a former Academic All-American, Mr. Fisher encouraged the students of WMS to make academics their most important priority in pursuing and achieving their dreams.
The FREEZE and THINK strategy teaches students to slow down in situations where reacting too quickly could result in a negative consequence. If students FREEZE and consider the consequences of their actions, they will adopt better decision making. This strategy teaches students to Focus on what’s important, Realize who they are, Eliminate negative influences, Encourage others, Zone in on their goals, and Expect Success.
Each student received a wristband with the slogan FREEZE AND THINK on it at the end of the assembly to remind them of the important strategy learned. Students were able to take photos with Levar and get autographs from him. Mr. Fisher enjoys speaking to elementary, middle, and high school students throughout the country and feels that it is a privilege to inspire today’s youth. His assembly was a great success and another way that Whiting Middle school is working to address the needs of its students.
