CROWN POINT | The newest addition to Lake County Sheriff John Buncich's fleet is a 28-foot aluminum patrol boat plying the county's Lake Michigan shoreline.

Buncich said the 2013 Silver Ships AM 800, a rigid-hull inflatable boat equipped with the latest in marine electronics and side-scan sonar, was pressed into service this week to search for a man reported missing and presumed drowned in the waters off Whihala Beach in Whiting.

The county obtained the vessel with a $219,149 grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency's Port Security program and the $20,920 trade-in value of the department's 1995 Silver Ships vessel.

"We are afforded the opportunity to respond to critical incidents on the water with this boat to save lives ... without the use of any additional county funding," Buncich said.
