WHITING | The Whiting Fire Department recently received a $23,616 Federal Emergency Management Agency grant to purchase 20 portable P25 digital radios.
The department was previously using analog radios that were purchased in the mid-1990’s. The new radios will allow firefighters to have a safe, reliable and effective communication system, according to Fire Chief Gus Danielides.
"While the firemen are the basis for our success, these radios will improve communications between not only our Whiting fire and police departments, but also our neighboring communities and agencies. They will bolster our 'on scene' effectiveness, and provide safety to our firefighters, as well as the citizens of Whiting," Danielides said .
The radios will also benefit the Lake County area by facilitating mutual aid agreements. Danielides stated that this is the first FEMA grant received by the Whiting department since 2006. "I would like to thank Lt. Don Harbin, who assisted on following the FEMA requirements in completing this grant," Danielides added.
