WHITING | Rescue workers recovered a body late Monday after a search for a young person who jumped off a pier at Whiting Park and went missing in Lake Michigan, an official said.
Indiana Department of Natural Resources' Law Enforcement Division is leading the investigation of the apparent drowning and and planned to release more information early Tuesday.
Four young people jumped off the pier into the water between 7 and 7:30 p.m. Monday, said Daryl smith, who was visiting the park with his girlfriend and her son.
Smith said he and his family watched the people as they hesitated for a while before jumping in. When one jumped in, the other three quickly followed, he said.
Smith said he heard cries for help shortly afterward.
He said three of the people were able to swim to beams supporting the pier and wait for rescuers but one didn't make it back.
Authorities began asking a crowd of onlookers to leave the park about 10 p.m. A group of young people remained in the grass near the start of the pier, some sobbing. Caution tape lined the sidewalk between a Whiting ambulance and the pier.
