Advent reconciliation rite

WHITING | An Advent Reconciliation Service is from 7 to 8 p.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 1845 Lincoln Ave. It includes Advent hymns, Scripture readings and an examination of conscience to help individuals prepare to receive the sacrament of reconciliation whether face to face or in the confessional.

Winter string concert

CROWN POINT | The Crown Point High School Orchestra performs a winter string concert from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Crown Point Community Library, 122 N. Main St. Refreshments will be provided by the Friends of the Library. Meeting room doors open at 5:30 p.m., concerts will begin promptly at 6.

Holiday Concert Series ends

CROWN POINT | The Crown Point High School Performing Arts Department concludes its Holiday Concert Series with choir concerts at 6:30 and 8 p.m. in the high school auditorium 1500 S. Main St. Tickets can be purchased at the school box office from 2:40 to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and one hour before each performance. Homebuyer workshop slated

HAMMOND | United Neighborhoods Inc. hosts a free homebuyer educational workshop from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Hammond INnovation Center, 5209 Hohman Ave.,  Hammond. Completion of the workshop may qualify attendees for down payment assistance through Hammond's Homebound Program or UNI's Affordability Assistance Allowance Program. Toys, gifts for families in need

MERRILLVILLE | Laurel Church Ministries has partnered with people and businesses of Northwest Indiana to distribute free toys and other gift items for families in need this Christmas season. Gifts will be given out on a first-come, first-served basis beginning at 7 p.m. at the church, 7525 Taft St., Merrillville. In addition there will be drawings for special gifts items.Cocoa and treats will be served to families and children ages 2-12 also will be welcome to play in the indoor play land. Walk salutes Frost poem

HAMMOND | The Whiting-Robertsdale Frosties take their annual Walk in the Woods on the darkest evening of the year. This is an opportunity to find some solitude during the busy holiday season. Centered around the poem, “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening” by Robert Frost, the annual event, has gained national attention. Participants meet at 7 p.m. at the Hammond Environmental Education Center, 2405 Calumet Ave., Hammond. Participants should bring a flashlight and dress for the weather. There is no charge and children who can walk at least two miles outdoors are welcome to attend.

'Nutcracker Tale' has a twist

GARY | "Cirque du Jazz: A Nutcracker Tale," is from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at the Wirt Visual and Performing Arts High Ability Academy auditorium, 210 N. Grand Ave. It's sponsored by the South Shore Dance Alliance, offers circus staging, aerial performance surprises, and musical mix of classical Tchaikovsky and Duke Ellington jazz versions of the traditional "Nutcracker" score, delivering an avant garde twist on the holiday classic. Old-time radio show recreated

HOBART | "Merry Christmas, George Bailey," a recreation of the 1940s radio show of "It's a Wonderful Life," is from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Center Stage Studio Theatre, 227 Center St., Hobart.
