WHITING | To staff the largest economic development project in the history of the State of Indiana, BP Whiting Refinery steadily employed 650 operating engineers and numerous union trades. "The working relationship established between the International Union of Operating Engineers Local No. 150 and the BP Whiting Refinery benefited all of Northwest Indiana," according to a spokesman for the city of Whiting.
Looking to help those less fortunate and having operated their own food pantry, Operating Engineers Local No. 150 searched for an opportunity to give back to Whiting-Robertsdale community which supported them during this modernization project.
With the assistance of Thomas Keilman of BP Government Relations, the Whiting-Robertsdale Food Pantry was identified and a donation of $7,500 was presented by James M. Sweeney, president/business manager of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local No. 150.
“We are truly grateful for the consideration and generosity of the Operating Engineers Local No. 150 toward those in need in our community," said Whiting Mayor Joseph Stahura in accepting the donation.
The Whiting-Robertsdale Food Pantry serves the needs of those less fortunate residing in the 46394 zip code. The pantry operates by community support through monetary and food donations. Monetary donations to the Whiting-Robertsdale Food Pantry can be made by sending a check to: Whiting-Robertsdale Food Pantry, 1443 119th St., Whiting, IN 46394.
