WHITING | The Whiting Public Library Chess Club would like to congratulate two of its members. On Nov. 9, Elijah and Benji Williams traveled to Canterbury School located in Fort Wayne to compete at the 2013 Indiana State K-12th Grade Chess Championships.
The event was sanctioned by the Indiana State Chess Association in cooperation with Scholastic Chess of Indiana.
All students, including those home-schooled, throughout the state of Indiana were eligible to participate at this event. Players were separated into divisions based on their individual grade levels and only competed against participants in their grade. In addition, all competitors had to be current members of the U S Chess Federation.
Elijah Williams, who is rated 1,460, finished four out of five including a decisive round three victory against a 1,679 rated player, who was favored to win the tournament. He also had one draw but remained undefeated on the day earning him the seventh grade state championship. The victory earned him a trophy, as well as, a $50 Amazon gift card.
Elijah's brother, Benji, also had a successful showing at the day's event. He ended the day with three wins and two loses, earning him the third place trophy for third grade and a $25 Amazon Gift Card.
Both Elijah and Benji are Whiting residents and regular attendees at the Library's Chess Club, which meets every Wednesday at 6 p.m. in the Meeting Room. So, next Wednesday why not stop by the library, play some chess, and meet some state champions.
