WHITING | A Whiting man was charged with murder Monday morning in connection with the shooting death of another Whiting man early Saturday.
Matthew Scott Noojin, 23, admitted to killing Eric Jovine Picazzo, 22, after the two exchanged words at a party on the city's south side, police said.
Noojin, of the 1400 block of Fischrupp Avenue, was taken into custody by Whiting police and Northwest Indiana Major Crimes Task Force officers Saturday afternoon, and a handgun used in the shooting was found at his home, police said.
The men argued over a girlfriend at a party in the 2100 block of Schrage Avenue, and Noojin chased Picazzo to the 1500 block of Fred Street, where the shooting occurred, the Lake County prosecutor's office said.
Picazzo had been shot eight times by the time officers were called to the scene at 3:57 a.m., and 10 spent shell casings were found there, police said.
Noojin previously was convicted in Lake County court of felony theft and arson in a 2009 case, authorities said. Picazzo, at the time of his death, was wanted for missing hearing dates in Whiting and East Chicago courts on traffic and conversion charges.
