WHITING | On Friday November 9, Mr. Jimmy Cabrera, sponsored by the US Hispanic Leadership Institute, delivered an energetic, interactive, motivating, and inspiring message to the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students at Whiting Middle School.
Whiting middle school students learned that attitude is everything and they can succeed in school and beyond by packing their "backpacks" with strong, positive values that will help shape their future. Mr. Cabrera's assembly focused on self-esteem, character, respect, developing a plan of action, goal setting, and the importance of education. His energy and enthusiasm was contagious as staff and students were on their feet, arms outstretched, cheering "If it is to be....It is up to me"!
The students' eyes were open to the great possibilities their futures hold if they make the commitment to succeed now in middle school. One lucky 6th grade student walked away with a backpack full of school supplies and gifts after correctly identifying the last five United States presidents; demonstrating to students that knowledge is power and people will pay you for your knowledge and expertise. In addition to his strong message to students to stay in school, Mr. Cabrera also talked to students about being proud of their heritage, not bullying others, and avoiding involvement in alcohol, drugs, and gang activity.
Mr. Cabrera has presented to over 1,500 schools in the last 30 years and his favorite audience is speaking to today’s youth. Mr. Cabrera stated that “I am here to help make a difference by encouraging and helping every student to become better prepared for life….to stay focused on their education and college readiness”. As a follow-up activity, the WMS students will be writing letters to Mr. Cabrera after the presentation telling him what they learned from his presentation.
