WHITING | Police are investigating a shooting Sunday near the Whiting Community Center that's believed to be gang related, officials said.
A 19-year-old Robertsdale resident was walking on Community Court near Clark Street when a vehicle pulled up with an undetermined number of occupants at about 7:30 p.m., Whiting police Detective Capt. John Sotello said.
A man then stepped out of the vehicle and exchanged words with the Robertsdale man before reportedly shooting him in the back with a handgun, according to Whiting police.
The suspected shooter then fled in the dark vehicle, Sotello said.
Police had no one in custody as of Monday afternoon, and no charges had been filed in the incident, Sotello said.
The victim is in serious condition and was airlifted to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, Sotello said.
Police were seeking the shooter on Monday and are following leads in the case.
