WHITING | The Whiting-Robertsdale Chamber of Commerce is unveiling two new awards this year at its annual dinner on Feb. 23.

The chamber is currently accepting nominations for the Teacher of the Year and Public Servant awards, said Tom Dabertin, president of the Whiting-Robertsdale Chamber of Commerce.

The Teacher of the Year Award will be given to a teacher out of the following schools: Whiting High School, Whiting Middle School, Clark High School and Middle School, Nathan Hale Elementary School, Franklin Elementary School and St. John the Baptist Catholic School.

The Public Servant Award will be given to an individual from the city of Hammond or city of Whiting.

For both awards, nominations can be made in writing and sent to the chamber at 1417 119th St. Nomination letters aren't required to be signed, but it's preferred.

“It's extremely important to honor those giving back to our community,” Dabertin said. “Our belief is honoring the teacher, given the contributions they make both to present day children and the future of the community is crucial, as is the public servant.

"What makes Whiting and Robertsdale what it is, is very good individuals that work for either community. Their service helps make our community what it is.”

The chamber also will award its long-running Binhammer Award, which is the award for the resident of the year, at the dinner.

The featured speaker at this year's dinner is former football player Otis Wilson, a member of the 1985 Chicago Bears. The dinner will be Feb. 23 at Dynasty Banquet Center in Hammond. A silent auction will begin at 6 p.m. followed by dinner at 7 and Wilson's talk at 8.

Tickets to the dinner are $65. For more information or to RSVP contact the Whiting-Robertsdale Chamber of Commerce at (219) 659-0292.
