WHITING | The Whiting-Robertsdale Chamber of Commerce has a new executive director.
Karen Gajewski, of Whiting, will take the helm of one of the longest-running chambers of commerce in Northwest Indiana in March.
Before coming to the chamber, Gajewski, a 1988 graduate of Bishop Noll Institute, served as a customer service representative and financial planner for a variety of banking and financial institutions.
“We thought her community involvement coupled with customer service expertise will serve the chamber members quite well,” said Tom Dabertin, president of the Whiting-Robertsdale Chamber of Commerce. “One of the things that struck the interview committee, including myself, was her passion for the job.”
Gajewski said she applied for the position because she wanted to become more involved in the area.
“As the town is growing, I would love to see the merchants do better and bring in some new business. Just encouraging growth in the town,” Gajewski said.
Gajewski, who has lived in Whiting for 17 years, said she hopes to get high school students more involved in the chamber. The chamber hosts well-known events throughout the year, including Bunch-O-Bunnies, Pierogi Fest and Garage Mahal.
“I just have been a part of the community for so long, I like the familiarity of it,” Gajewski said. “The community in itself, the people are amazing in the town, and it's just historically beautiful and there's so much positivity.”
