WINFIELD | A Crown Point man is expected to face charges in connection with a Tuesday bank robbery in Winfield, police said.

Christopher Gerlach, 39, is expected to be charged with robbery and attempted robbery and confinement, according to the Lake County Sheriff's Department.

Gerlach entered Centier Bank, 8020 E. 109th Ave., just before 5 p.m., police said.

Gerlach grabbed one of the bank staff by her upper arm and pushed her into an empty office, where he announced the robbery, said Patti Van Til, spokeswoman for the Lake County Sheriff's Department.

Gerlach then took the woman to the teller line, where he let her go, Van Til said.

He did not show a weapon. Bank staff gave Gerlach money and he fled on foot, Van Til said.

A resident of nearby Lakes of the Four Seasons contacted the subdivision's security department a short time later and said a suspicious person was running through his yard.

Security took Gerlach into custody and held him until sheriff's police arrived.
