WINFIELD | A single-vehicle crash Wednesday morning into a Kankakee Valley REMC electrical pole at Randolph Street and 121st Avenue cut power to some customers in that area, including Jerry Ross Elementary School.

An automated message sent to parents of Jerry Ross children just after 10 a.m. said students would be transported by bus to nearby Winfield Elementary School and would spend the remainder of the school day in the Winfield gym, where lunch would be provided.

Students at Jerry Ross were loaded onto buses and planned to go to Winfield, but at 11 a.m. Winfield school officials reported the power was back on at Jerry Ross and students would continue their day in class as normal.

Another automated message sent to parents of Jerry Ross students said after-school activities would continue as normal.

A vehicle hit the pole just before 9 a.m. and split it nearly in two, said Amanda Steeb, spokeswoman for Kankakee Valley REMC.

Steeb said 450 customers were impacted by the outage. Steeb confirmed power was restored to those customers about 11 a.m. after a pole was replaced.

The Lake County Sheriff's Department called for a closure of Randolph Street between 117th and 123rd avenues as a precaution.
