WINFIELD | A chiropractic clinic was damaged Sunday morning in a blaze at 7620 E. 109th Ave., officials said.

The fire started just before 11 a.m. and flames were seen shooting out the front of Kauffman Chiropractic, which is west of Randolph Street.

Kevin LaDuke, assistant fire chief for the Lakes of the Four Seasons Volunteer Fire Force, said the fire was contained to the attic space of the building. The inside of the business was damaged by water and work done by firefighters to ensure the fire was out.

Firefighters battled the blaze for one to 1.5 hours, LaDuke said. One firefighter was treated for a heat-related injury.

It was still unclear Sunday evening what started the fire, LaDuke said. The business had been closed since Friday.

Firefighters were initially dispatched to the business after receiving reports of smoke coming from the building.

Fire departments from Boone Grove, Hebron, Hobart, Crown Point, Washington Township and Union Township assisted in putting out the fire, LaDuke said. The Lake County Sheriff's Department, Lakes of the Four Seasons security and the American Red Cross also helped.
