WINFIELD | Building permits issued by the town for residential construction are down from last year, the Town Council heard at its final meeting of the year.
Clerk-Treasurer Rick Anderson reported the town issued 80 residential building permits as of Dec. 18.
“Last year at this time, there were 91 residential building permits issued,” he said.
However, the good news is that the permits have exceeded 2010, when the economy hit home building especially hard, Anderson said.
By the end of 2010, the town had only 59 residential permits requested.
One reason for fewer residential building permits this year was the moratorium on building and occupancy permits for the Wyndance and Deer Creek Estates subdivisions ordered by the Winfield Town Council in March.
The town ceased to issue those permits for Dave Van Dyke’s Precision Homes Inc. in Highland and Ken and Shannon Thieneman of Thieneman Homes Inc. in Crown Point/Merrillville because of problems with the Deer Creek sewer lift station that serves all homes in both subdivisions.
Van Dyke developed Wyndance and Deer Creek Estates as Deer Creek Investors LLC and Deer Creek Development LLC. The Thienemans also developed Wyndance in addition to building homes there.
Anderson said commercial building permits were “moving along” although he didn’t have specific numbers for the category.
