WINFIELD | The Winfield Town Council has dropped the speed limit along a portion of 109th Avenue.

Beginning Thursday, a new 30 mph speed limit will go into effect along 109th Avenue from Miami Street east to Randolph Street.

The Town Council voted unanimously to reduce the current 40 mph speed limit along what Councilman Don Samburg called “a bad stretch of road."

Samburg said he talked with the pastors of two churches along that portion of 109th and received positive feedback on speed reduction.

“It’s part and parcel of an effort to start controlling traffic in the town of Winfield.” he said.

The date for installing new speed limit signs was chosen to give residents advanced notice of the change, Samburg said in proposing the change.

“One concern was not bringing the speed limit down immediately. We want to give everyone plenty of notice. This is nothing like at Jerry Ross Elementary,” he said.

On Sept. 26, the Winfield Town Council voted to immediately reduce the speed limit from 40 mph to 30 mph on Randolph Street in front of the elementary school. That led to tickets being issued to a number of motorists who continued to speed past the school.

Samburg said new flashing signs will be installed on Randolph going past the school in the near future.

“We just have to decide how to pay for those signs,” he said.
