WINFIELD | The Winfield Town Council has amended the municipality’s traffic and parking ordinance to reflect recent changes in speed limits on local roads.

The change gives the Lake County Sheriff's Department the authority to write traffic violations in Winfield. The town contracts with the Sheriff's Department for police services.

This year the council reduced speed limits to 30 mph on sections of Randolph Street and 109th Avenue.

On Sept. 25, the Town Council approved the immediate reduction of the speed limit from 40 mph to 30 mph along Randolph Street from 109th Avenue to 117th Avenue in front of Jerry Ross Elementary School.

At that meeting, Councilman Don Samburg called the traffic situation in front of the school “a disaster waiting to happen.”

“I got a call from (Lake County Commissioner) Gerry Scheub (D-Crown Point) and from the building principal, Jennifer Stolarz, about the problem with traffic at Jerry Ross Elementary,” Samburg said at the September meeting. “We met with the sheriff (John Buncich) at the school in the morning, and I saw that traffic flies by at 40 to 50 mph."

Earlier this month the Town Council voted unanimously to lower the speed limit from 40 mph to 30 mph along 109th Avenue from Miami Street east to Randolph, an area Samburg called “a bad stretch of road."

Lake County sheriff’s police have been issuing traffic citations along both streets.
