MICHIGAN CITY | An inmate at the Indiana State Prison here assaulted a correctional officer Wednesday and then took another employee hostage, authorities said.

Prison officials said the offender, Scott A. Nicholson, 42, assaulted a correctional officer and subsequently confined another correctional employee while in a housing unit at the prison about 9:30 a.m.

Authorities said emergency responders began negotiating with the inmate. The employee was released about 11 a.m., and Nicholson then came out of his cell and was taken into custody.

The correctional worker was treated for superficial cuts, while the correctional officer was not injured. Prison officials declined to name either employee.

Nicholson was convicted Friday of attempted murder and other charges in the assault of a correctional officer while incarcerated at the Pendleton Correctional Facility in 2007. He also faces murder charges in Miami County related to the 2004 killing of a fellow offender while incarcerated at the Miami Correctional Facility. Nicholson was sentenced to 42 years in 1998 for a conviction on charges of armed robbery, criminal confinement and attempt to deal in controlled substances.

The Indiana Department of Correction is working with Indiana State Police on additional charges, prison officials said.
