LAPORTE | All that is left of a glass porch is the roof after a suspected drunk driver struck a residence late Thursday night outside of LaPorte.

The driver, Kevin Childers, 25, of Rolling Prairie, allegedly told a sheriff's officer, "I'm drunk, deputy," following the crash.

"It looks like the house exploded," said Norman Hartline, who lives next door.

Hartline, 62, said he had just gone to bed when he heard the crash. He said he stepped outside to see the taillights of the Jeep Cherokee at his front door step.

Childers was arrested on suspicious of operating while intoxicated with an alleged .24 percent blood alcohol concentration, three times the legal limit of .08.

About 11:30 p.m., LaPorte County Sheriff's Department was called to the 1000 block of East Division Road.

Childers allegedly struck a utility pole and drove through the glass porch, shattering the structure.

Glass fragments were thrown into Hartline's property some 100 feet away. He was awake until 2 a.m. washing his driveway to get rid of the glass, he said.

No one has lived in the home for about a year. No injuries were reported.

Hartline said he is still picking up pieces of broken furniture and other items sent flying from the porch into his yard. He isn't sure how he'll get the glass out of the yard.

"I guess I'm going to have to get down on my hands and knees," Hartline said.
