A road between Westville and LaPorte reopened Tuesday after a FedEx driver slammed into a bridge too low for his truck to pass underneath.
LaPorte County police said the roof on practically the entire truck, starting at the cab, was ripped open Monday.
County Highway Department Superintendent Bob Young said the road reopened Tuesday.
During the crash, chunks of concrete dropped from the bridge onto driver Eric Steele while he was in his seat.
Steele, 23, of Portage, was taken to a hospital with injuries believed not serious, Sheriff Mike Mollenhauer said.
The investigation shows the FedEx cargo truck was southbound on County Road 700 West near County Road 100 South just after 11 a.m.
The truck was 11 feet tall, which is two feet above the Norfolk Southern bridge clearance Steele attempted to drive underneath Monday.
Mollenhauer said it appears there was no attempt to stop before reaching the overpass despite yellow signs posted with the bridge's height.
Police said one of the chunks of concrete that came off the bridge measured 3 feet tall by 8 feet wide.
The size of the chunk prompted a call to a railroad inspector to come out and determine if the bridge is still safe, police said.
Mollenhauer said 700 West was closed between 50 South and 100 South pending the outcome of the bridge inspection.
Young said the old bridge is only wide enough for one vehicle to pass at a time.
He said the state's current standard is for any new bridge be built 13 feet 6 inches off the road's surface.
Young said any work to elevate or replace the bridge would be the responsibility of the railroad.
