OTIS | The temporary shutdown Wednesday night of U.S. 421 near Otis was caused by an apparent drunken driver from Crown Point, according to LaPorte County police.

Dennis Hicks, 46, was arrested for operating while intoxicated, police said.

Just before 7 p.m., police said Hicks had been seen veering over the center line a half dozen times before colliding with an oncoming driver, Mathew Bradshaw, 23, of Michigan City, just north of Purdue North Central.

Hicks was the only person injured, suffering what police described as a minor injury to his face.

Both lanes of the highway were shut down for at least one hour. - By Stan Maddux, Times Correspondent
