LAPORTE | A Michigan City man was sentenced Friday to 12 years in prison for robbing the Archie's restaurant in LaPorte in 2011.
Demetrius Smith, 26, was given an eight-year maximum sentence for Class C felony robbery and another four years because the crime violated terms of his probation.
Smith was on probation for robbing a Michigan City woman in 2007, according to court documents.
Smith admitted to robbing Archie's in November 2011.
According to court documents, Smith lifted up his shirt displaying what appeared to be a handgun in his waistband and fled with $280 in cash.
Within minutes, police and a K-9 located Smith a few blocks away from the restaurant.
Smith was given the option of petitioning the court to be placed on work release after serving half of his prison sentence.
